A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES, SHADOW OF NIGHT, THE BOOK OF LIFE–they are known collectively as the All Souls Trilogy. There are three reasons for it. First, “all souls” captures the central theme of the books, that all creatures in this world are worthy of dignity and respect. Second, it is the date of Matthew’s human birthday: 2 November. Finally, it is the name of Matthew’s Oxford college, All Souls, the one famous for its brilliant fellows.
