Ipswich

Crane Beach (Ipswich): If you’re in the mood for a classic New England beach, stop by Crane Beach and enjoy the waves and the atmosphere. If you have time, a stop at the nearby Crane Estate may bring back memories of another witchy story, John Fowler’s The Witches of Eastwick. The movie was filmed here.

Greenwood Farm: This must-see treasure is located in a nature preserve, and was the model for the Proctor House. It is not open to visitors, but you can walk around outside, and the setting is where all the events of The Black Bird Oracle took place. Please respect the privacy of the residents of the farm (aka Diana and Matthew’s house), and remember this is conservation land.

Zumi’s Espresso and Ice Cream: to refuel, stop by my inspiration for The Thirsty Goat. Not sure they stock Eye of Newt sorbet, though.

The Clam Box: a deservedly famous place that’s been serving up excellent seafood and fries since 1935. It’s an Ipswich tradition!

Salem

Salem Witch Trials memorial: for those interested in history, and for a peek into the dark days of 1692, this is a required stop.

Peabody Essex Museum: One of my favorite museums, with ongoing exhibitions of family treasures from Salem and the surrounding area that were given to the museum for safekeeping. There’s no telling what might be on display. John Proctor’s sundial? Rebecca Nurse’s loom? Hours of fun can be had here!

Proctor’s Ledge Memorial: A fitting place to end your visit to Salem and reflect on the destructive power of fear and prejudice.

The Witch House: stopping by this house, the only one still standing and open to the public that is connected to the famous trials of 1692, it’s important to remember this residence was occupied one of the judges–not one of the accused. It’s a good way to imagine yourself into those times.

Bookstores: Stop by these local bookstores to browse their selection of books on local history and witchiness.
