On Sunday, 18 September, we will begin the annual reread of the first book in the All Souls Trilogy – A Discovery of Witches. Many of you have done this before, but for those of you who haven’t joined in the fun, here’s what happens:

The action of A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES takes place over a span of forty days from September 18 to October 31. We follow as the story unfolds, sometimes reading several chapters at a time, sometimes waiting for days (like Diana and Matthew) for the next big thing to happen.

For each day on the All Souls Calendar when there is action, I post something: a picture, a song that inspired me, some notes about the writing challenges of that particular chapter, etc. Readers have really enjoyed following along in the past, and I hope this year will be the biggest and best Real-Time Reading yet, with glimpses into the process of adapting the series for TV.

One reason we are so excited is that if you are reading along, we hope you will post pictures and reactions on social media using the tags #DeborahHarkness and #RealTimeReadingADOW.

These will automatically feed to the tagboard in the “FOR FANS” area on my new website (same address, new design: deborahharkness.com), where you will be able to see posts from readers all around the world. Post pictures of your cup of tea/coffee and book, a glass of wine, or whatever reading ritual you have. Those of you who live in or near locations mentioned in the book are especially encouraged to post pictures that capture the magic of the place. And when we get closer to Halloween in the Bishop House we hope to see lots of pictures of costumes, decorations, and pumpkins (real, or in spiced lattes–up to you!)

A FREE guide to the real-time reading, with notes, calendars, photos, and more is available in an e-book version (Kindle, Nook, and iBooks) all over the world. Check with your favorite online retailer. (search tip: type in “harkness all souls companion” to find it easily)
Here are a few links to get you started, with apologies that I can’t list iBooks links because you can only access them through the app in particular countries. Sorry, also, that this is only available in English, but the images and calendar should be clear regardless.

I’ll see you back here on Saturday with my first post. Until then, dust off your copies of ADOW, download the companion, and get ready to walk forty days in Diana’s shoes.
It all begins with a discovery of witches….
